The Judicial Selection Commission (JSC) manages the first part of Connecticut's judicial appointment process. We review applications, learn about each candidate, and recommend qualified candidates to the Governor. This guide explains what you can expect during the JSC process.
Step 1: Choose the right application
Start by choosing the application that matches your situation.
You can apply for:
Each application has its own forms and instructions.
Step 2: Complete your application
Fill out your application and include all required forms and supporting documents. Review everything before you submit it.
Step 3: We review your application
After we receive your application, we review your information and supporting documents. We also gather background information and comments from other sources to learn more about each candidate.
Step 4: Meet with the Commission
Every candidate meets with the Commission for an interview. If we need more information, we may continue the interview before making a decision.
Step 5: We evaluate each candidate
Before making a decision, we review each candidate using established standards. We consider factors such as:
- Legal ability
- Professional experience
- Integrity
- Character
- Judicial temperament
These and other qualifications help us decide whether to recommend a candidate.
Step 6: We make our recommendation
If we recommend you, we add your name to the list and send it to the Governor for judicial nomination. If we do not recommend you, you may ask for a brief summary of the reasons for our decision.
Step 7: What happens next
Our role ends after we send our recommendations to the Governor. The Governor manages the next step in the judicial appointment process.
