What is an initial judicial appointment?

An initial judicial appointment is for lawyers who want to become a Connecticut judge. The Judicial Selection Commission (JSC) reviews applications, interviews applicants, and recommends qualified candidates to the Governor for nomination.

To apply, you must have a law degree, be a resident of and a registered voter in the State of Connecticut, and be under the age of 70.

Application for judicial appointment

Use this application to apply for a judicial appointment. The Judicial Selection Commission reviews the application and schedules an interview with the candidate. Following the interview, the Commission decides whether to recommend the candidate for appointment. Complete the application and include all required information.
 

Financial affidavit

Use this form to provide financial information to the Judicial Selection Commission. Include your income, assets, debts, and other required financial information. We use this information when evaluating candidates for judicial appointment.
 

Voluntary Information form

The Voluntary Information form collects demographic information in order to meet State reporting requirements. Completing this form is voluntary and is separate from the review of your qualifications.
 

Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) form

Use the DESPP Authorization for Release of Personal Information form when you apply for a judicial appointment. This form allows the Connecticut State Police to conduct a background investigation and share the information with the Commission for review.
