  (HARTFORD, CT) – Today, at 1:30 p.m., DEEP will provide a technical background briefing for reporters on the estimates of the regional environmental, health, and economic benefits and costs of the Transportation and Climate Initiative Program (TCI-P), a historic program to reduce carbon pollution by 26% from transportation sources and invest $1 billion in Connecticut by 2032.

  Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Commissioner Rob Klee are applauding an announcement by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt that he is reversing course on his decision to postpone the implementation of the 2015 Ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) by one year – a move that the Connecticut officials had criticized, saying that the delay would put Connecticut at an economic disadvantage against states that ignore critical air quality issues while also prolonging the risk of illness for thousands of residents in the State.

Malloy and other Connecticut officials are urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to approve a petition filed by the State of Connecticut along with eight other neighboring Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states to require nine upwind states located in the west and the south to reduce air pollution generated within their borders that is carried to states in the northeast by prevailing winds, causing public health issues for area residents and economic disincentives for the region’s businesses.

  Connecticut will receive $14,846,465 through a multistate settlement with auto-maker Volkswagen that resolves state claims that the company violated environmental laws when it equipped certain diesel vehicles with illegal and undisclosed emissions defeat devices designed to circumvent emissions standards, Attorney General George Jepsen said today.
