• U.S. Court of Appeals Upholds Connecticut Challenge OF NRC Rule on Storage of Spent Nuclear Reactor Fuel

  Attorney General George Jepsen announced a landmark decision by a federal appeals court that upheld a challenge Connecticut filed with New York, New Jersey and Vermont, among others, to a rule by the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission that allows spent nuclear fuel to be stored at reactor sites for up to 60 years after the plants shut down.

• Apple, Publishing Companies Charged With Illegal Price-Fixing Scheme in Marketing of eBooks

  Attorney General George Jepsen announced today that 16 states, led by Texas and Connecticut, have filed an antitrust lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Texas alleging Apple Inc. (Apple), and publishing companies Macmillan Publishers Ltd. (Macmillan), Penguin Group (USA), Inc. (Penguin) and Simon & Schuster engaged in an anticompetitive price-fixing scheme for marketing electronic books.

  Attorney General George Jepsen and state Department of Social Services Commissioner Roderick Bremby are cautioning consumers about a postal scam involving fraudulent sweepstakes award notifications accompanied by a bogus government check bearing the State of Connecticut seal and purporting to be from the Department of Social Services.

• ADVISORY: Triad Conference Scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 1, Postponed

  The annual Connecticut Triad conference, “No Excuse for Financial Abuse,” scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Riverfront Community Center, 300 Welles Street, Glastonbury, is cancelled for weather-related reasons. It will be rescheduled at a later date.

• Connecticut Agencies Protest ISO New England Budget Increases

  Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen, Consumer Counsel Elin Swanson Katz and the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority today filed a protest with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission against ISO New England Inc.’s proposal to increase its budget, paid for by electric customers, by nearly 10 percent.

  Attorney General George Jepsen said Connecticut will receive approximately $6 million from federal and state civil and criminal settlements announced today with Illinois-based Abbott Laboratories over allegations the company promoted sales and use of prescription drug Depakote for uses that were not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as safe and effective.
